Day of Optics and Photonics at the University of Jijel (Algeria) to celebrate IYL 2015 and Ibn al Haytham’s Optics (April 2015)

Proclaimed International Year of Light and Light-based Technology by the United Nations General Assembly, 2015 commemorates important dates in the history of science with the 1000th anniversary of the publication of Ibn al Haytham’s major works in the field of optics.
Algeria is involved in the celebration of IYL 2015 through many events around the country, starting from the opening ceremony launched last April 11th in Algiers with the major participation of the UNESCO Director General.
To celebrate the contribution of Arab scholars to optics through the centuries, the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Jijel University, located in the East of Algeria, organized a Day of Optics and Photonics in partnership with "Ibn Al Haytham" International Working Group (IWG) and with the support of the Optical and Photonics Algerian Society (OPLAS). This day was organized on May 3rd , 2015 with the participation of Ph. D. students of the faculty and managed by Dr. Mahmoud Riad Beghoul. During the opening ceremony, Prof. Mohamed Rachid Mekideche, the dean of the faculty, emphasized the importance of celebrating the IYL 2015 with a special concern about the contribution of Arabs to Optics. Prof. Nouredine Boutaoui, the director of Laboratory LEM of the faculty, indicated the interest of this day of Optics and Photonics for Ph. D. students especially with the recent development of photonics technology. Finally, Prof. Azzedine Boudrioua, the coordinator of Ibn al Haytham International Working Group (IWG), presented the activities of the IWG group and animated a session dedicated to Arab’s Optics with a focus on the contribution of Ibn al Haytham as the father of optics and the scientific method. Moreover, during this event, many Ph. D. students presented several posters related to light and light-based technology.
Arouse interest in this event push university officials to consider organizing a major event during the academic year in October 2015.
