The Islamic Golden Age of Science for today's knowledge-based society: the Ibn al Haytham example
As part of the celebrations of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, UNESCO hosted on 14 and 15 September 2015, the first International Conference dedicated to the heritage of Ibn al Haytham who is considered one of the pioneers of optics with his book Kitab al-Manazir (the Book of Optics), published almost 1000 years back (in 1028). Over 200 participants attended it. The Opening Address of the conference was delivered by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, who said in her speech: "Today, in these times of significant changes, where ignorance and extremism spread, it is essential to do everything in order to teach the common history and share all the history of women and men who had given everything to transform our world today. Ibn al-Haytham stands out in this "pantheon" as a great scientist and humanist". For his part, John Dudley, President of the Steering Committee of the International Year of Light, stressed that: "Today's conference reminds us that UNESCO plays an essential role in protecting and preserving the Legacy of Ideas ".

Among the resolutions adopted at the round table organized at the end of this conference, we note in particular the launch of an International Association "Ibn al Haytham International Society" in order to perpetuate the actions taken during this 2015.

Presentation of the final report of IYL 2015 UNESCO HQ
Monday 30th October, 2016 (UNESCO HQ, Paris)
As part of the celebrations of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, UNESCO hosted on 30th October 2016, the final ceremony dedicated to the presentation of the final report of IYL 2016 celebration. The ceremony gathered some 400 participants, among them eminent scientists, industrials, high level officials and decision makers.
Selected topics was presented during this ceremony to highlight the achievements of IYL 2015. In particular, the work performed by the IWG was presented as an important part of IYL 2015 celebrations. It was emphasized to continue this work under the guidance of LHiSA society.

This book discuss light-based science, its foundation starting by the tremdous contribution of Ibn al Haytham, and the future development, emphasizing light-based technology in material sciecnce, energy, policy, and education. Written as a multi-disciplinary reference by leading scholars in the field of history of science and photonics, Ibn al Haytham’s optics, LED lighting for sustainable development, global, atomic-scale time with new light sources, high technology, and vision science will be covered. Cutting-edge optical technologies and their global impact are addressed in detail.
